Goodbye from December 18 and Radio1812

Dear colleagues and friends,

Two years ago we announced that because of a difficult funding situation, we were closing down our office in Brussels and putting some activities of our organization on hold.

Despite these difficult decisions we did manage to pull off two further successful editions of the annual Radio1812 event and even introduced some new elements such as the Odysseia audio magazine. This would not have been possible without the continued - although very limited - financial support and the contributions from the team of volunteers.

Joint approaches to address irregular migration of vulnerable groups

As states address the issue of irregular migration through policies with a predominant focus on preventing entry and facilitating return, undocumented migrants and the civil society groups that support them face increasing challenges to guarantee that a basic level of human dignity is upheld. The international human rights framework outlines a broad range of rights that are applicable to all individuals regardless of their status. This paper provides insight into the divergence from these principles in core aspects of undocumented migrants’ daily lives.

The invisibles

Every year, thousands of migrants face kidnap, rape and murder in Mexico. Driven by grinding poverty and insecurity back home, they travel through Mexico in hope of reaching the USA with its promise of a better life. But all too often their dreams are turned to nightmares. Told over four parts, The film "The Invisibles" exposes the truth behind one of the most dangerous journeys in the world and reveals the untold stories of the people who make the journey north through Mexico.

Switzerland: Migrants gain experience in direct democracy

Voting on November 28 should be of particular interest to immigrants - one of the issues the Swiss will decide on is whether to accept an initiative launched by the rightwing Swiss People’s Party that calls for the deportation of foreigners who are convicted of crime.

The voting is part of a project called Baloti which offers a multilingual platform for migrants to make their voice heard.

Voices after Exit: Diaspora Advocacy

Today’s diaspora organizations, communities, and individuals increasingly seek to influence government, media, private sectors, and other prominent groups in their countries of origin and of settlement – but despite their growing voice, success requires smart policy.
