Goodbye from December 18 and Radio1812

Dear colleagues and friends,

Two years ago we announced that because of a difficult funding situation, we were closing down our office in Brussels and putting some activities of our organization on hold.

Despite these difficult decisions we did manage to pull off two further successful editions of the annual Radio1812 event and even introduced some new elements such as the Odysseia audio magazine. This would not have been possible without the continued - although very limited - financial support and the contributions from the team of volunteers.

UN censures practice of detaining migrants

The United Nations has in a new report expressed grave doubts about the widespread practice of detaining migrants. States use a variety of reasons to justify this practice and some see irregular migration as a national security problem or a criminal issue, notes the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants, François Crépeau, in his latest report to the Human Rights Council.

"Victims of Complacency": Trafficking and Abuse of Migrant Workers on U.S. Military Bases

A report released by the ACLU and Allard K. Thailand: Don’t Deport Pregnant Migrant Workers

Thailand’s government should scrap the labor minister’s proposed regulation to deport migrant workers who become pregnant, Human Rights Watch said today. Freed but not Free: A Report Examining the Current Use of Alternatives to Immigration Detention

This new report by the Rutgers School of Law–Newark Immigrant Rights Clinic (IRC) and the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) Immigrant Rights Program, examines the various mechanisms employed by Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE)—including in-person reporting requirements and electronic (or ankle) monitoring—to supervise immigrants who are not in detention. For the thousands of participants in ATD programs—many of whom have been deemed neither a flight risk nor a danger to the community—the programs “can be both liberating and debilitating,” the report finds.

Why 'illegal immigrant' is a slur

Last month's Supreme Court decision in the landmark Arizona immigration case was groundbreaking for what it omitted: the words "illegal immigrants" and "illegal aliens," except when quoting other sources. The court's nonjudgmental language established a humanistic approach to our current restructuring of immigration policy.

Balkans: Roma pay the price of visa liberalisation, NGO survey says

The visa liberalization with the EU has resulted in arbitrary border controls and travel bans in the countries of the so-called Western Balkans. This is the result of a comparative survey on the measures which have been taken by countries of the region in reaction to EU pressures over an increase in the number of asylum seekers from these countries.

Migrant Nightmares: Ethiopian Domestic Workers in the Gulf

Employment opportunities in Ethiopia are scarce, particularly for young women with only a basic education from rural areas where 85% of the population live. Many travel to the towns and cities in search of work, only to discover a barren job scene. The World Bank puts unemployment at 20.5% with a quarter of all 15-24 year olds being out of work.  Unable to find anything in Ethiopia, some venture further afield to the Gulf States.

Human Cargo: Arbitrary readmissions from the Italian sea ports to Greece

Thousands of protection seekers try to cross the sea from Greece to Italy every year. If they manage to arrive in Italy however, they are immediately returned to Greece without any individual assessment of their cases, without any legal safeguards, the report HUMAN CARGO - Arbitrary readmissions from the Italian sea ports to Greece by PRO ASYL and the Greek Council for Refugees has revealed.
