It describes the displacement of migrants and asylumseekers during this period and highlights human rights concerns, as well as the relevant normative framework.

Visto que en todo el mundo hay muchos millones de trabajadores y trabajadoras migrantes que efectúan el trabajo del hogar, la CSI señaló que sin un control adecuado, estos trabajadores seguirían padeciendo condiciones de empleo violentas y opresivas, la explotación de las agencias de contratación, una remuneración por debajo de los mínimos legales, el impago de sus salarios, la exclusión de los regímenes de seguridad social, un número excesivo de horas de trabajo y las peores formas de trabajo infantil doméstico.

A défaut d’une surveillance appropriée des conditions d’emploi des millions de domestiques migrants dans le monde, cette catégorie de main d’œuvre restera à la merci de conditions de travail inhumaines et répressives auxquelles s’ajoutent les abus perpétrés par les agences de recrutement, les rémunérations en dessous des minimums légaux, le non-paiement des salaires, l’absence de protection sociale, les horaires de travail excessifs et les pires formes de travail des enfants.

With many millions of migrant workers in domestic labor around the world, the ITUC said that without proper monitoring, these workers would continue to suffer violent and oppressive employment conditions, exploitative recruitment agencies, remuneration below legal minimums, nonpayment of wages, exclusion from social security schemes, excessive working hours, and the worst forms of child domestic labour .

Millions of domestic workers around the world are employed in private homes, often unregulated by public authorities, making them vulnerable to exploitation. This week the ILO has been meeting in Geneva to design a convention to protect them.

Following lengthy negotiations the ILO have agreed an historic Convention on Decent Work for Domestic Workers, 50 years since the issue of their rights were first raised. This is a fantastic achievement for domestic workers – one of the most vulnerable groups of workers across the world.

Migrants underwrite development through their remittances

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today underlined the role of migrants in accelerating development through remitting funds regularly to their countries of origin, noting that their economic contributions to host societies are often overlooked.

“Let us not forget, entire communities subsist almost entirely on remittances,” Mr. Ban told the General Assembly’s thematic debate on Migration and Development.
