Le traitement médiatique des naufrages incessants qui ont lieu sur nos côtes européennes les réduit à des faits divers isolés, des tragédies humaines sur lequel le politique ne pourrait rien. Ce ne seraient que des actualités « froides », banales et répétitives, qui ne méritent pas qu’on s’y attarde. Et quand, comme lors du printemps arabe, les traversées sont trop nombreuses pour ne pas faire actualité, elles ne sont racontées que sous le prisme de l’invasion et du danger.

It took hunger strikes and a case like Layla Naimi’s to push authorities in Poland to amend laws dealing with irregular migrants.

Authorities will not be obliged to send such migrants to detention centres. Following complaints, the prosecutor has opened an investigation into the refugee centre at Lesznowola near Warsaw. Inspections in all detention centres for foreigners have been announced by the Ombudsman and by the Ministry of Interior, to be carried out together with members of the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights and the Legal Intervention Association.

Imagine having to make a choice between your personal safety, or keeping your family together. Too many immigrant women, forced into the shadows of society, have had to make that choice. I have had to make that choice.

I endured abuse by my partner, while worrying constantly about my then three-year-old son. But, because of my immigration status, I feared what would happen if I contacted the authorities. When I finally did make the decision to call, my fears turned out to be all too real.

El 20 de abril de 2012, el Gobierno español aprobó el Real Decreto Ley 16/2012 que modifica la Ley de extranjería, que negaría el acceso a los servicios esenciales y preventivos para la salud de los migrantes indocumentados. Esta nueva ley, que entrará en vigor el 1 de septiembre de 2012, solamente dejará a la atención de emergencia, la maternidad y el cuidado infantil accesible de forma gratuita.

Le 20 avril 2012, le gouvernement espagnol a adopté l’arrêté 16/2012 modifiant la loi sur les étrangers qui refuse l'accès aux services de soins essentiels et préventifs pour les migrants sans-papiers. Cette nouvelle loi, qui entrera en vigueur le 1er septembre 2012, ne donnera l’accès gratuit qu’aux soins d'urgence, de maternité et pédiatriques.

Spain: A step backward in the right to health care for all

On 20 April 2012, the Spanish government adopted the Royal Decree Act 16/2012 amending the Foreigners Act, which would deny access to essential and preventive health care services for undocumented migrants. This new law, which takes effect on 1 September 2012, will leave only emergency care, maternity and child care accessible free of charge.
