Labour Exploitation, Main Reason for Human Trafficking, Says IOM Report

Half of the human trafficking cases brought before IOM for assistance in 2011 involved victims of labour exploitation according to IOM’s  first  report on counter trafficking and assistance to vulnerable migrants.

The report which looked into human trafficking trends in 2011, by way of assistance, collected   information from more than 150 IOM Missions.  

2012 Global report on trafficking in persons

In 2010, just few months short of the tenth anniversary of the adoption of the Protocol, Member States renewed their commitment to the fight against trafficking in persons when the General Assembly adopted the United Nations Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons (A/RES/64/293). In the framework of the Global Plan of Action, the General Assembly mandated UNODC to publish a Global Report on Trafficking in Persons every two years, starting in 2012.

“Trafficking in persons is a global phenomenon which crosses borders, markets and industries,” said the United Nations Special Rapporteur Joy Ngozi Ezeilo while urging business enterprises around the world to refrain from using trafficked labour, and prevent and monitor the use of such labour by its suppliers. 
        

Migrant Women Trapped in Sex Trade

When French police broke up a Nigerian human trafficking ring that allegedly forced young migrant women into prostitution, the arrests cast a sharp light on the plight of what the authorities called “modern-day slaves”, here and throughout Europe.

Following the operation last month, police said that the criminal ring had trafficked young Nigerian women into France via Italy, and that the women were forced into prostitution to pay off thousands of euros in so-called debts to those who had arranged their smuggling.

Smuggling of migrants generates billions each year for criminals

Each year criminals are estimated to generate around $6.75 billion from the smuggling of migrants from just two of the principle routes, namely East, North and West Africa to Europe and from South America to North America. As a form of transnational organized crime, the smuggling of migrants forms part of a new campaign by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

CCME and partners launch video spots on labour trafficking

Tens of thousands persons every year find themselves trafficked into forced labour in Europe, according to estimates in the EU Member States, with exploitation happening mainly in the areas of construction, agriculture or domestic services. Against this background, CCME and its partner’s organisations in four European countries have launched on 15 March 2012 a series of video spots, asking EU citizens to “open your eyes” and help in identifying trafficked persons.
