Can migrants save the global economy?

Can migrants save the global economy? They already are. Remittances channel resources directly to families and communities, ultimately supporting entire economies. But relying solely on migrant labor for this economic support is not only unjust, it is unsustainable. Enacting changes in corporate practices and government policies to hold these institutions accountable to migrants is a necessary step to building a just global economy, one that will not collapse under the weight of unregulated financial flows.

USA: Report on Immigrants and the Economy

In the 25 largest metropolitan areas of the United States, immigrants are contributing to the economy in very close proportion to their share of the population, according to a report released by the Fiscal Policy Institute. The report looks at all immigrants—documented and undocumented, across the economic spectrum.

The migrant condition.

In his speech delivered at the 2009 People's Global Action Conference in Athens earlier this month, Walden Bello writes that migrants' rights have to be addressed on two fronts: end the neoliberal policies that are responsible for creating poverty in their home countries, thus forcing them to emigrate, and demand that they are given full rights in their host countries.

La Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales, El Observatorio Migrantes del Caribe y el Centro de Investigaciones y Estudios Sociales de la Universidad Iberoamericana (UNIBE) invitan este miércoles 18 de noviembre al lanzamiento de un Migration Policy Brief titulado Economía y Migraciones en Tiempos de Crisis, de la atuoría de Andre Gallina y Bridget Wooding.

En la actividad los comentarios serán hechos por los Doctores Bernardo Vega y Rolando Guzmán.

The Alicante Congress is in line with the South/North Dialogue on Mediterranean started in 2006 in Algiers. It will take place from 19 until 21 November 2009 in Alicante and it will bring together actors from both shores on the double theme of Education and Migrations in order to analyse experiences of citizens from the South and the North. The aim of the Congress is to define a line of conduct in these fields, starting from your experiences and this in the prospective of a larger cooperation between the two shores of the Mediterranean.

Migrant Resource Centres: Examining Global Good Practices in Providing Services to Empower Migrants for Development and Protection

This rapid assessment prepared by the IOM in preparation of the 2009 Global Forum on Migration and Development considers the work of 17 different Migrant Resource Centres (MRCs) around the world. Although in recent years the growth in number of MRCs, defined here as physical structures which provide services to migrants which facilitate and empower them to migrate in a legal, voluntary, orderly and protected fashion, has been notable, there has thus far been no attempt to assess the impact of these MRCs on migration management goals.

Policy Briefing on Statelessness, Protection and Equality

This briefing provides a typology of stateless people and contexts, reviews, relevant international law and jurisprudence, and assesses the links between nationality and the protection of human rights. It gives recommendations for reducing and eliminating statelessness in the future.
