This week, SOLIDAR launched the briefing “Making Migration Work for Development –Recommendations for Decent Work, Social Protection and Inclusive Development for Migrants”. Its conclusions are clear: For a truly rights-based approach to migration, we need strong provisions for social protection, the safeguarding of fundamental rights, access to health care, upward social mobility and access to lifelong learning for all members of society. It is about human beings and human rights.

With reports on Mexico and Morocco and a feature interview with Ska Keller, member of the European Parliament for the Greens, our reporters Nina Haase, Jenni Roth and Ruth Reichstein worked hard to make this first edition worth listening to.

En repli pour la troisième année consécutive en 2010, les flux migratoires internationaux sont repartis à la hausse en 2011, selon un nouveau rapport de l’OCDE.

Les Perspectives des migrations internationales 2012 montrent que l’immigration permanente à destination des pays de l’OCDE a connu une baisse de 2,5% en 2010 par rapport à l’année précédente, avec 4.1 millions de personnes concernées.

International migration starting to rebound, says OECD

International migration fell for the third consecutive year in 2010 but started picking up again in 2011, according to a new OECD report.

The 2012 International Migration Outlook says that permanent migration into OECD countries fell by about 2.5% in 2010 from the previous year, to 4.1 million people.

Asia to face ‘increased migration’

Asia should prepare for a dramatic change in international migration trends due to the worsening debt crisis in Europe, according to the Secretary-General of the Geneva-based International Catholic Migration Commission (ICMC).

There is already a reverse trend of migration from Europe to Latin America, Johan Ketelers said, adding that he predicts high-tech talent may also  look for job opportunities in developing Asian countries such as China and India.

Russia, one of the world’s main recipients of migrant labor, is a major destination country for migrant workers from Central Asia. Remittances from Russia are especially critical to the economies of Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan,1accounting in Tajikistan’s case for nearly half of the country’s GDP. But as the 2008 financial crisis revealed, labor migration has become an unreliable political and economic crutch for these states.
