Migration and Immigrants Two Years after the Financial Collapse: Where Do We Stand?

Immigrants, particularly men and youth, have been disproportionately hit by the global economic crisis that began in fall 2008 and now confront a reality of dwindling budgets for public services and immigrant integration programs, this report for BBC World Service reveals. The report, which has a particular focus on five North Atlantic countries -- Germany, Ireland, Spain, the United Kingdom and United States – finds that the unemployment gap between immigrant and native workers has widened in many places.

New Social Watch Report launched

On Friday 17 September the international NGO network Social Watch released its critical report: “After the Fall: Time for a New Deal” at the United Nations in New York, ahead of the Millennium Development Goals Review Summit on 20-22 September. The report shows how most countries are a long way from achieving the MDGs in time for the 2015 deadline and calls for a radical policy overhaul.

Migration and the Gulf

This collection of essays is the first of three volumes devoted to Migration and the Arab World. The 19 authors whose essays appear in this first volume address several salient questions: What are the sizes and characteristics of the non-national workforces of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries? Which “push” and “pull” factors have driven and continue to drive this phenomenon? What effects has labor migration had on the sending and receiving countries, and on the migrants themselves?

Can migrants save the global economy?

Can migrants save the global economy? They already are. Remittances channel resources directly to families and communities, ultimately supporting entire economies. But relying solely on migrant labor for this economic support is not only unjust, it is unsustainable. Enacting changes in corporate practices and government policies to hold these institutions accountable to migrants is a necessary step to building a just global economy, one that will not collapse under the weight of unregulated financial flows.

La Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales, El Observatorio Migrantes del Caribe y el Centro de Investigaciones y Estudios Sociales de la Universidad Iberoamericana (UNIBE) invitan este miércoles 18 de noviembre al lanzamiento de un Migration Policy Brief titulado Economía y Migraciones en Tiempos de Crisis, de la atuoría de Andre Gallina y Bridget Wooding.
