This pilot edition focuses on the routes migrants take and the difficulties and challenges they face when moving from one country to another. With reports on Mexico and Morocco and a feature interview with Ska Keller, member of the European Parliament for the Greens, our reporters Nina Haase, Jenni Roth and Ruth Reichstein worked hard to make this first edition worth listening to.

Roma evictions: the European Union is not respecting its commitments to human rights!

During summer 2012, various governments of the European Union evicted Roma from their houses. Some states also evicted this population from their land. The European Association for the defense of Human Rights (AEDH) calls on the States to stop these evictions and their stigmatization policy towards the Roma people. The European Association for the defense of Human Rights (AEDH) denounces the violence against Roma people of various Member States of the European Union who took advantage of the summer to expel them from their precarious houses.

Borderline The EU's New Border Surveillance Initiatives

One of the fundamental findings of this study is that the EU’s new border regime would not only infringe fundamental rights, it would also, in spite of its questionable benefits, cost billions – and that against the background of pervasive budget cuts and austerity measures. Above all, this would profit Europe’s defence contractors, as they would receive EU funding for “smart gates,” UAVs, and other surveillance technologies. The technological upgrading of the EU’s external borders will obviously open up new markets to European security and armament companies.

Migrant domestic workers and EU migration law

This blog series has two parts. In this first part today, I examine some of the recent developments in international law relating to migrant domestic workers (of which there are several). In the second part, posted by my colleague, Dr Clíodhna Murphy, will examine the changes recently introduced to the overseas domestic worker regime in the United Kingdom.

Eurosur: When border control takes precedence over migrants' lives

Eurosur, the proposal for regulation concerning a border monitoring system, was presented by the European Commission on December 12th 2011, and puts cross-border crime on the same level as illegal immigration. It overlooks search and rescue at sea, despite it featuring in the 2008 Communication.

SOS Europe: Human Rights and Migration Control

In an attempt to prevent “irregular migration” from Africa to Europe, some European countries implement border control measures outside their own territory. States have reached agreements to intercept boats at sea and return people to Africa, in circumstances that expose people to serious human rights violations. This report examines some of the human rights consequences for migrants, refugees and asylum-seekers that have occurred in the context of Italy’s migration agreements with Libya.
