Italy: Summary Returns to Greece Violate Rights

Italy is summarily returning unaccompanied migrant children and adult asylum seekers to Greece, where they face a dysfunctional asylum system and abusive detention conditions, Human Rights Watch said in a report published today.

Protecting children on the move: two news handbooks from Terre des Hommes

‘What can you do to protect children on the move’, focuses on the prevention aspects. It is aimed at organisations which try to stop children from experiencing harm as a result of exploitation or other abuse—particularly young people who move from one place to another (with or without other family members) or migrate within their own country or to another country.

Being young and out of place

Young people may be particularly susceptible to being physically and socially ‘out of place’ during this period of their lives. FMR 40 examines the stresses of ‘being young and out of place’, explores young people’s needs and coping strategies, and asks why relatively little attention is paid to their rights and needs. It also includes articles on other subjects such as national IDP policies in Afghanistan and Nigeria, resettlement in Argentina, mental health in Lebanese camps and why some issues make it onto the international agenda while others do not.

New report about the detention conditions of Minors at the Greek-Turkish Border

Every day in the Evros region at the Greek-Turkish Border, tens of children are locked up simply because they do not hold the right documentation. Many of these children are unaccompanied minors. Immigration detention has a devastating effect on children’s physical, emotional and psychological development and must be stopped. The Greek Council for Refugees (GCR) has release a report about the Special Holding Facility for Illegal Migrants “Fylakio” in the border area.

Pourquoi partent-ils? Comment s’y prennent-ils? Où vont-ils? Que cherchent-ils? Quel est leur vécu? Que deviennent-ils? Quelles sont leurs attentes?

Call for more coordinated approach to child protection in West Africa

A new report on child migration in West Africa says thousands of children are being sold, exchanged or transported out of their communities each year in violation of internationally-recognized rights of the child, and calls on the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to persuade governments to better protect these children.

Urgent need to protect the rights of migrant children

A new study by the United Nations Human Rights office has identified “serious protection gaps for migrant children in every region of the world.” It calls on countries of origin, transit and destination to adopt a child-sensitive and rights-based approach to protect the human rights of children at all stages of the migration process.

The study points out that children in the context of migration, including children left behind and children on the move, are particularly at risk of discrimination, violence and abuse.
