On 1st May Migrant Domestic Workers in Europe Advance Campaign for ILO Convention on Domestic Work

Amsterdam – Migrant Domestic Workers (MDWs) from Asia, Latin America, Africa as well as from Europe are joining with Trade Unions in several cities around the world today to highlight their demand for a rights based ILO Domestic Work Convention. In Asia, May Day 2010 is being celebrated as Asian Domestic Workers´ Day. In Europe, members of the RESPECT network in Europe have launched their initiatives in Athens, Dublin, London and Amsterdam.

What viewpoints have international human rights organisations adopted since 2000 on a number of aspects relating to the treatment of migrants in the Netherlands? How have politicians and the press responded to these viewpoints? And have any steps been taken as a result of international criticism? Three circumstances serve to illustrate the importance of these questions. Government policy on immigrants has undergone continuous change since 2002, and successive governments have been exploring limits ever since that year.

This Conference is being prepared by the Transnational Migrant Platform (TMP) as part of the European Working Group (EWG) initiatives participating in the International Working Group (IWG - including Migrant Rights International and Migrant Forum Asia) and the Greek Hosting Committee for the People’s Global Action. The People’s Global Action (PGA 2009) will be held  in Athens from October 31 to November 5 on the occasion of the inter-governmental Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD).
