'This is my home. This is where I grew up'

HOLDING HER newly acquired certificate of citizenship and speaking in a lilting Letterkenny accent, Tatiana Bezborodova speaks of growing up in Ireland, of her studies in Trinity College Dublin, but mostly of how “enormously unfair” it is that she has to pay more than three times as much in university fees as long-term Irish citizens, who only have to pay student contribution fees.

Russian-born but Donegal-raised from the age of 7½, Tatiana finally received Irish citizenship last Thursday at the age of 19.

Ireland: Hundreds of undocumented migrants stage candlelit march

Hundreds of undocumented migrants and their supporters staged a candlelit march to the Dáil this afternoon to highlight the plight of 30,000 people who are living undocumented in Ireland.

Led by banners reading “Santa is Undocumented too”, the organisers of the march called on the Government to give Ireland’s undocumented workers the opportunity to legalise their status.

One organiser, Edel McGinley of the Migrant Rights Centre, said many marchers had “taken a great risk” to attend the demonstration.

Ireland: Inquiry under way into alleged abuse of embassy staff

THE GARDA is investigating four cases in which employees of Dublin-based embassy staff have alleged they were the victims of exploitation by their employers.

The cases involve staff of three different embassies. However, prosecutions are unlikely given that embassy staff can invoke diplomatic immunity.

Ireland: Focus on status of undocumented migrants

The introduction of a scheme to regularise undocumented people in Ireland would give credibility to efforts to persuade the US to regularise tens of thousands of undocumented Irish citizens there, according to the Migrant Rights Centre Ireland.

The organisation made the call to coincide with US president Barack Obama’s visit to Ireland.

Mr Obama earlier this month called for immigration reform in the US.

Migration and Immigrants Two Years after the Financial Collapse: Where Do We Stand?

Immigrants, particularly men and youth, have been disproportionately hit by the global economic crisis that began in fall 2008 and now confront a reality of dwindling budgets for public services and immigrant integration programs, this report for BBC World Service reveals. The report, which has a particular focus on five North Atlantic countries -- Germany, Ireland, Spain, the United Kingdom and United States – finds that the unemployment gap between immigrant and native workers has widened in many places.

Ireland: Migrant workers 'powerless'

Migrant workers in Ireland are being put in a “powerless situation” where they are wholly dependent on the employer for their permit and continued legal immigration status, an Oireachtas Committee has heard.

An ongoing campaign by the Migrant Rights Centre Ireland aims to give migrant workers the right to freely change employer, thereby stopping the exploitation of workers by unscrupulous employers.
