Amnesty International’s report, In Hostile Terrain: Human rights violations in immigration enforcement in the US Southwest, examines the human rights violations associated with immigration enforcement at the border and in the interior of the United States. Will migrants matter in then Mexican vote?

The clock is ticking as the registration deadline fast approaches for Mexican expatriates to vote in their country of origin’s presidential election this year. Although Mexican election officials are confident a late rush of applications will mean greater absentee participation than in the 2006 election, preliminary reports of the number of applications received indicate few expatriates will vote in the 2012 race.

In the past year alone, the organization has documented numerous cases where Central American migrants travelling through Mexico have been kidnapped, tortured, raped, killed and disappeared by criminal gangs, often with the complicity of public officials. Migrants’ rights defenders have also come under unprecedented attack.

En más de 2 mil visitas de trabajo de campo se pudo constatar 214 eventos de secuestro de indocumentados y dado que se trata de plagios masivos son varios miles de personas involucradas en estas acciones.

Pain Song Along the US - Mexico Border: the forced “yes” of Migration

Sergio and I were sitting in torn-out bus seats under a hot January sky in Nogales, Sonora, talking about crawling through thorn bushes. We were in an outdoor bus station with a shade-screen ceiling. About thirty other recently deported men and women were sprawled on the concrete, hunched in the gravel, or slouching in other deconstructed pairs of faded but once colorfully-patterned bus seats. Most of them were carrying heavy duty plastic Homeland Security bags.
