Strategies to End Double Violence Against Undocumented Women

Across the EU, undocumented women are turned away from women’s shelters and risk arrest or deportation if they contact the police. As one social worker in Belgium explained, “Undocumented women often stay in their situation of violence until they’re beaten to death because they don’t dare to go to the police or ask for help.”

Greece plans sweep of migrants and asylum-seekers

A plan to round up and detain irregular migrants and asylum-seekers in Greece, including those suspected of carrying infectious diseases such as HIV, has been called "deeply alarming" by Amnesty International.

Those considered vulnerable to such diseases, based on their country of origin, poor living conditions, occupation as sex workers or their drug use, will be targeted.

"These deeply alarming measures specifically target the most vulnerable people based on discriminatory criteria," said Jezerca Tigani of Amnesty International.

Once known for its large-scale emigration, Greece transitioned to a country of destination for Central and Eastern European immigrants after the fall of the Soviet Union and other communist regimes in the region. More recently, the country has become one of entry and transit for hundreds of thousands of unauthorized immigrants from Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.

South-Korea: Medical support set for undocumented migrants

The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced Wednesday it will provide medical aid to undocumented foreign workers in the capital, who are not entitled to social security and health care insurance. 

The city government plans to cover surgery costs and hospital charges up to 5 million won ($4,400) and provide interpretation and nursing services for up to a month depending on patients’ conditions, officials said. 

Irregular Migration in Europe
