Rights of migrants: UN expert in first fact-finding mission to Albania

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants, François Crépeau, will visit Albania from 5 to 13 December 2011 to assess the implementation of policies, strategies and laws to  protect migrants’ rights, including Albanian migrants living abroad, returnees and other migrants.

We are all migrants” – Time to change inflammatory talk on migration

The new Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants, François Crépeau, today urged the international community to embrace a new, balanced discourse on migration based on equal rights, non-discrimination and dignity, as well as on reality.

“Sealing the borders is a fantasy; migration happens and we have to live together,” Mr. Crépeau said in his first address* to the UN General Assembly.

Iceland: Concerns over prisons, and discrimination against migrant workers and refugees

On 10 October 2011, the Working Group on the UPR examined the human rights situation in Iceland. The delegation, numbering six, was led by Ogmundur Jonasson, Minister of the Interior. In his introductory statement the Minister highlighted several key concerns, including significant overcrowding in Icelandic prisons and the necessity of overhauling the detention system, the need to combat domestic violence via judicial reform, and working to close the gender-payment gap in the labour force.

Statement on Thai Government’s Remarks and Pledge to Enhance Human Rights Protections for Migrant Workers

"Moving toward Thailand’s pledge to enhance human rights protections for migrant workers, HRDF urges the Thai Government to consider becoming state party to the Convention on the Promotion and Protection of Rights of Migrant Workers and Members of their Family. To truly uphold the human rights of migrant workers on the ground as pledged, the TG must review domestic practices and policies relating to migrant rights protections, which are in conflict with the TG’s international obligations and recognized standards.”

Domestic Workers Convention May Be Landmark

When governments from around the globe passed a treaty in June to protect domestic workers, labor experts called it a surprising breakthrough for millions of exploited women. 

Even countries that fail to ratify the pact will eventually be judged by its standards, they said, and the campaign to pass it had enlisted fresh allies, newly mindful of abuses from unpaid wages to rape.

New Treaty brings hope to domestic workers

A newly minted international treaty, the Domestic Workers Convention, gives advocates an immediate opportunity to push for local legislation, even though it may take a long time for domestic workers worldwide to enjoy the treaty’s full protection, explained four experts on a panel held by the Open Society Foundation in New York on September 21.

The report seeks to describe the human rights implications of the cross-border movement of migrants and asylum-seekers fleeing recent events in North Africa in the period from January to August 2011. It describes the displacement of migrants and asylumseekers during this period and highlights human rights concerns, as well as the relevant normative framework.

Committee on Rights of Migrant Workers holds 15th session in Geneva

The fifteenth session of the Committee on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families will be held at the Palais Wilson in Geneva from 12 to 23 September 2011. During its two week session, the Committee will review efforts by Argentina, Chile and Guatemala to implement their obligations under the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families, and make recommendations to these countries.

December 18 is an NGO in Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.
