Indonesia: Workers sent home $6 billion

Despite disruptions to labor agreements last year, Indonesians working abroad managed to send home US$6.1 billion in 2011. Some argue that this figure is too small to be ignored, and challenge the government to step up its efforts to protect the safety of its citizens working abroad.

Anis Hidayah, executive director of Migrant Care, a nongovernmental organization (NGO) focused on workers’ rights, repeated the call in response to the remittances the migrant workers sent home.

Developing Countries to Receive Over $350 Billion in Remittances in 2011, Says World Bank Report

Remittance flows to developing countries are expected to total $351 billion this year, and worldwide remittances, including those to high-income countries, will reach $406 billion for the current calendar year, according to a newly updated World Bank brief on global migration and remittances.

The top recipients of officially recorded remittances, estimated for 2011, are India ($58 billion), China ($57 billion), Mexico ($24 billion), and the Philippines ($23 billion). Other large recipients include Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Vietnam, Egypt and Lebanon.

Europe-wide Diaspora Platform for Development launched!

A platform representing Diaspora organizations working on international development issues was today created at the end of a three-day meeting of diaspora organizations drawn from 13 countries in Europe. The conference held at the Kontakt der Kontinenten in Soesterberg, The Netherlands resolved that the Europe-wide Diaspora Platform for Development be formed to coordinate international development efforts of migrants in Europe.

But there are not that many new sources of funding that can be tapped for such noble purposes. The migrants of developing countries offer a rare pool of resources that can be tapped via diaspora bonds.

UN agency calls for cheap transfer costs for migrants sending money home

The United Nations agency that promotes the integration of developing countries into the world economy is calling for cheaper ways for migrant workers to send money back home so as to maximize the economic impact.
