Imperfect Justice: Anti-Roma Violence and Impunity

Many Romani victims of violent attacks do not secure justice, according to the findings of research undertaken by the European Roma Rights Centre (ERRC) in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia.

ENAR on the Swiss deportation referendum

The European Network Against Racism (ENAR) is seriously concerned by the recent referendum in Switzerland in favour of the automatic deportation of foreigners convicted of certain criminal offences, including minor offences. This vote is the result of a xenophobic and discriminatory campaign launched by the populist Swiss People's Party, making dangerous amalgams between immigration and criminality.

ENAR surveys on monitoring ethnic diversity in the workplace

In 2010, ENAR’s expert group on promoting equality in employment will address the issue of monitoring and benchmarking concretely the situation of ethnic and religious minorities in employment to ensure progression in the race towards equality and prosperity. This pioneering initiative started in 2009 and brings together four major multinational companies (SODEXO, L'OREAL, IBM, ADECCO Group), trade unions, EU institutions, national governments and the anti-racist civil society.

Roma expulsions challenge Europe's benevolent self-image

It is arguably modern Europe's flagship ideal: the freedom to move across borders and seek a better life elsewhere.

But in the Europe of Nicolas Sarkozy, Silvio Berlusconi, and others, the privilege has its limits -- and its paradoxes. Effectively excluded, it seems, is the one group singly most identified with a nomadic and peripatetic existence: the continent's 10 million-strong Romany population.

South Africa: Migrants fear attacks after World Cup ends

The World Cup, which has spread warm feelings of unity across the continent, will likely mark a respite in the sporadic attacks on the millions of Africans who have flooded into South Africa looking for work in mines and homes in the region's most prosperous country, experts have said.

Japan, U.N. share blind spot on 'migrants'

On March 23, I gave a speech to Jorge Bustamante, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Migrants, for NGO FRANCA regarding racial discrimination in Japan. Text follows:

First ever EU-wide survey of minorities: Mapping Discrimination across Europe

The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) released the results of its survey of over 23,000 individuals from ethnic minority and immigrant groups about their experiences of discrimination, racist crime, and policing in the EU. The results reveal shocking evidence about the discrimination faced by minorities in everyday life; in the classroom, when looking for work, at the doctor's, or in shops. On the eve of the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion, the FRA calls for targeted policies to combat the marginalisation of these groups.
