Arizona, world celebrate International Migrants Day

On Sunday, December 18, many throughout the world recognized International Migrants Day, a day designated by the U.N. to recognize the role migrants play in nations across the globe. The U.N. first established International Migrants Day in 2000, as part of a larger effort to disseminate information and raise awareness of the human rights and the fundamental freedoms held by migrants. In a statement released in honor of this year’s Day of the Migrant, U.N.

Ireland: Hundreds of undocumented migrants stage candlelit march

Hundreds of undocumented migrants and their supporters staged a candlelit march to the Dáil this afternoon to highlight the plight of 30,000 people who are living undocumented in Ireland.

Led by banners reading “Santa is Undocumented too”, the organisers of the march called on the Government to give Ireland’s undocumented workers the opportunity to legalise their status.

One organiser, Edel McGinley of the Migrant Rights Centre, said many marchers had “taken a great risk” to attend the demonstration.

International Migrants Day: Mexico still failing to protect migrants

The Mexican government has failed to live up to its promise to protect migrants from widespread human rights abuses, Amnesty International said today, ahead of International Migrants Day on 18 December. 

In the past year alone, the organization has documented numerous cases where Central American migrants travelling through Mexico have been kidnapped, tortured, raped, killed and disappeared by criminal gangs, often with the complicity of public officials. Migrants’ rights defenders have also come under unprecedented attack.

Older ethnic minorities and migrants are also part of the EU’s ageing population.

Frequently the ‘migrant’ factor is forgotten in discussions on Europe’s ageing population. But older migrants and ethnic minorities face specific challenges in Europe in accessing care, the labour market, and securing their livelihoods. Targeted measures are needed to address these shortcomings, said ENAR and AGE Platform Europe ahead of International Migrants’ Day on 18 December. Read more

Día de Acción Global llama la atención sobre derechos violados de miles de migrantes en todo el mundo

El próximo domingo, 18 de diciembre, fue ratificado por el Forum Social Mundial en Dacar (2011) para ser el Día de Acción Global por los Derechos de los Migrantes, Refugiados y Personas desplazadas. La fecha se remite al día en que la Organización de las Naciones Unidas (ONU) adoptó la Convención por los Derechos de los Trabajadores Migrantes y sus Familiares.
