“Can’t ignore the rights of migrants” – UN expert tells Global Forum on Migration and Development

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants, François Crépeau regrets that migrants’ rights are not yet a central pillar of the agenda of the Global Forum on Migration and Development, but was pleased with the inclusion of migrants’ rights in many discussions at the Forum. The Forum is the largest state-led global forum dealing with migration and development and its 6th annual edition was held in Mauritius on 21-22 November. 
  

"We are here for change" - GFMD Civil Society Days Statement 2012

PORT LOUIS, Mauritius 22 November 2012- More than 800 representatives from civil society and governments from some 160 countries gathered in Mauritius this week to discuss changes needed in labour migration, protection of migrants, promotion of their rights and development. 

Countdown to the Civil Society Days

For the first time since the founding of the Global Forum on Migration and Development, the co-chairs of the Civil Society programme this year are migrants themselves, and both born in Africa, as are the greatest number of the leaders and representatives of civil society organizations worldwide gathering in Mauritius for the Civil Society Days of the Global Forum on Migration and Development on 19 and 20 November. On Wednesday 22 November, civil society leaders will meet to discuss their perspectives and recommendations directly with the representatives of some 150 governments.

Sharan Burrow, the General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation speaks with Radio1812 about the Global Forum on Migration and Development. She argues that the GFMD should be put back with the UN system and stresses that "a worker is a worker is a worker" and migrant workers deserve equal treatment. Produced by Ruth Reichstein for Radio 1812.

Civil Society Urges Governments to Fill Leadership Gaps in Migration

The Civil Society Days of the Global Forum on Migration and Development concluded with high energy at the “common space” between civil society and governments on the morning of December 1st. After two days of working sessions that built upon the recommendations of past GFMDs and brought to light new concerns, civil society presented a statement to governments calling for more engagement and leadership to combat xenophobia and promote rights-based migration policies.
