“Mediterranean takes record as most deadly stretch of water for refugees and migrants in 2011”

This is a summary of what was said by UNHCR spokesperson Sybella Wilkes – to whom quoted text may be attributed – at the press briefing, on 31 January 2012, at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.

According to UNHCR estimates, more than 1,500 people drowned or went missing while attempting to cross the Mediterranean to reach Europe in 2011. This makes 2011 the deadliest year for this region since UNHCR started to record these statistics in 2006. The previous high was in 2007 when 630 people were reported dead or missing.

Europe’s Own Human Rights Crisis

In a separate essay in its World Report 2012, HRW analyses long-term trends on human rights in Europe. It concludes that declining respect for rights, weak enforcement when violations do occur, the growing influence of extremist parties, and the retreat from the idea that rights apply equally to everyone amount to a crisis that demands urgent action.

SOLIDAR reacts to EC Migration Policy Package

SOLIDAR welcomes the much anticipated Commission "Migration Policy Package", published on November 18, which highlights several essential priorities such as the portability of social rights and the monitoring of the Employers Sanctions Directive, but criticises that it falls very short in setting the policy context for an approach to migration which respects human and workers’ rights as stipulated in the Charter for Fundamental Rights.

EU: Support for 'single permit' to facilitate flow of legal migrant workers

The Civil Liberties and Employment Committees of the European Parliament have backed a Single Permit Directive, which will give migrants from third countries who are working legally in the EU the same status as EU nationals, to enjoy comparable working conditions, social security and access to public services.
