HOLDING HER newly acquired certificate of citizenship and speaking in a lilting Letterkenny accent, Tatiana Bezborodova speaks of growing up in Ireland, of her studies in Trinity College Dublin, but mostly of how “enormously unfair” it is that she has to pay more than three times as much in university fees as long-term Irish citizens, who only have to pay student contribution fees.

Russian-born but Donegal-raised from the age of 7½, Tatiana finally received Irish citizenship last Thursday at the age of 19.

Contributions sought for the 2010 annual report of the Special Rapporteur on the right to education

The annual report of the Special Rapporteur on the Right to Education, which will be presented to the Human Rights Council in 2010, will focus on the right to education of migrants, refugees and asylum-seekers.  With the aim of hearing from all interested persons and/or organizations about their experiences, concerns and thoughts on the provision of education for migrants, refugees and/or asylum seekers, the  Special Rapporteur kindly asks to respond to a questionnaire designed for UN, Government and NGOs experts, academics and other civil society actors.

The Congress of Alicante on Education and Migrations

The Alicante Congress is in line with the South/North Dialogue on Mediterranean started in 2006 in Algiers. It will take place from 19 until 21 November 2009 in Alicante and it will bring together actors from both shores on the double theme of Education and Migrations in order to analyse experiences of citizens from the South and the North. The aim of the Congress is to define a line of conduct in these fields, starting from your experiences and this in the prospective of a larger cooperation between the two shores of the Mediterranean.

Switzerland: Undocumented migrants run their own school

Switzerland is a tough place for asylum-seekers and undocumented migrants. In Zurich, they have been running a remarkable campaign for the past year, challenging the canton's asylum policy. Now, they have opened their own school.
