Europe’s Own Human Rights Crisis

In a separate essay in its World Report 2012, HRW analyses long-term trends on human rights in Europe. It concludes that declining respect for rights, weak enforcement when violations do occur, the growing influence of extremist parties, and the retreat from the idea that rights apply equally to everyone amount to a crisis that demands urgent action.

Cyprus continues illegal detentions in contempt of national and international court decisions

The Republic of Cyprus has repeatedly been criticised in recent years by a number of organisations, such as the Council of Europe, the European Parliament, human rights organisations, the most recent being Amnesty International, on matters relating to detention and deportation of third-country nationals, especially concerning the duration of detention and the absence of effective judicial procedures for reviewing administration decisions.

Immigration detention in Switzerland

From its 2005 adoption of a controversial asylum measure—“one of the strictest pieces of legislation in Europe,” according to UNHCR—to its 2009 referendum banning the construction of minarets on mosques, Switzerland’s reaction to immigration has become increasingly antagonistic in recent years. Swiss detention and deporation practices have been duly impacted by this situation. This Global Detention Project special report provides a first-of-its-kind view of the Swiss immigration detention estate.

Russia: Reported Roundup of Tajik Migrants

The Russian government should refrain from singling out any ethnic population for expulsion and ensure that any detentions and expulsions of foreigners have a legal basis, Human Rights Watch said today. According to media reports, Russia’s Federal Migration Service has said that it has detained several hundred migrant workers from Tajikistan since late last week and plans to expel many of them.
