Immigration detention in Switzerland

From its 2005 adoption of a controversial asylum measure—“one of the strictest pieces of legislation in Europe,” according to UNHCR—to its 2009 referendum banning the construction of minarets on mosques, Switzerland’s reaction to immigration has become increasingly antagonistic in recent years. Swiss detention and deporation practices have been duly impacted by this situation. This Global Detention Project special report provides a first-of-its-kind view of the Swiss immigration detention estate.

Swiss groups join international meeting to prepare for this year's GFMD in Geneva

Some 100 participants from Swiss civil society organizations, international non-government and labour groups, international agencies, governments and academia are gathering for a two-day “joint reflection” on issues of migration and development, in the lead-up to the annual Global Forum on Migration Development (GFMD) that the government of Switzerland is organizing in Geneva at yearend.

ENAR on the Swiss deportation referendum

The European Network Against Racism (ENAR) is seriously concerned by the recent referendum in Switzerland in favour of the automatic deportation of foreigners convicted of certain criminal offences, including minor offences. This vote is the result of a xenophobic and discriminatory campaign launched by the populist Swiss People's Party, making dangerous amalgams between immigration and criminality.

Switzerland: Migrants gain experience in direct democracy

Voting on November 28 should be of particular interest to immigrants - one of the issues the Swiss will decide on is whether to accept an initiative launched by the rightwing Swiss People’s Party that calls for the deportation of foreigners who are convicted of crime.

The voting is part of a project called Baloti which offers a multilingual platform for migrants to make their voice heard.
