Malta: Migrants say detention is not ‘inevitable’

"The detention policy criminalises migrants and is the main cause for racism in Malta," Osman Dicko from the Migrants' Network for Equality said. During a press conference held this afternoon in Valletta, Dicko together with a number of representatives from other NGOs announced a Walk Against Institutional Racism to be held on Wednesday at 5pm in Valletta.

Malta: Detention of migrants 'irreconcilable with human rights standards'

“Many migrants in Malta face inadequate living conditions and have little chance of integrating durably in society” the Council of Europe's Commissioner for Human Rights, Thomas Hammarberg, says in a report releasing today. He visited Malta for three days in March.

According to the Commissioner, Malta should establish a human-rights compliant system of reception and integration of migrants.

African migrants are drowning in the Mediterranean

Another boat carrying migrants from Libya capsized last week. At least 150 persons drowned, while others were saved by the Tunisian coast guard and fishing boats. In a similar tragedy in May, about 600 persons lost their lives. There are other reports about missing vessels with migrants on board and it is likely that the death toll for this year has now reached 1 400, or perhaps even more.

Seeking safety, finding fear: Refugees, asylum-seekers and migrants in Libya and Malta

Many thousand Somalis flee their war-torn country every year in search of safety. For those who reach Libya, indefinite detention, torture and other abuses await them. Many then embark on perilous sea journeys towards Europe. Those who survive often end up in Malta, where they face detention followed by isolation and poverty in cramped accommodation.
