IMD Statement from KISA in Cyprus

The escalation of the economic crisis during the past year has brought migrants third country nationals to a very difficult position since the shrinkage of the economy along with the demagoguery of the presidential candidates and their support groups have produced a very dangerous climate. Moreover, in view of the economic crisis, there is an attempt to violate the legal framework for human rights and the right to equal treatment as it is regulated by the European acquis.

Punishment without a crime: Detention of migrants and asylum-seekers in Cyprus

Hundreds of the men and women who flee each year to Cyprus in search of refuge and asylum from war, persecution and poverty are locked away by the island’s authorities in breach of their international obligations, Amnesty International said in a new report.

Mr Doros Polycarpou, Executive Director of KISA, is being prosecuted on charges of rioting, following tragic events at the Rainbow Festival on 5 November 2010, in Larnaca, Cyprus. Participants of a racist and extreme nationalist demonstration against migrants and refugees attacked the multicultural festival which KISA had organised with the support of local and European authorities. The police did not take the necessary measures to avoid the foreseeable clash and several festival-goers were seriously injured as a result, one of whom was stabbed.

Cyprus continues illegal detentions in contempt of national and international court decisions

The Republic of Cyprus has repeatedly been criticised in recent years by a number of organisations, such as the Council of Europe, the European Parliament, human rights organisations, the most recent being Amnesty International, on matters relating to detention and deportation of third-country nationals, especially concerning the duration of detention and the absence of effective judicial procedures for reviewing administration decisions.

International NGOs Urge Cypriot Authorities to Drop Charges against KISA

The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network (EMHRN), the Platform for International Cooperation on Undocumented Migrants (PICUM), the European Network Against Racism (ENAR), and Migreurop are deeply concerned with the Cypriot authorities’ prosecution of Mr. Doros Polykarpou, the Executive Director of Action for Support, Equality, Antiracism (KISA).

Cyprus: Festival turns into war zone as migrants and nationalists clash

One man was stabbed and several police and members of the public were injured last night at the annual migrants’ Rainbow Festival in Larnaca when violent clashes broke out between nationalist protestors and festival-goers.
 
Phinikoudes Beach was turned into a warzone, when marching members of three nationalist movements came into conflict with participants at the antiracism festival, and with members of migrant support group KISA, the organisers of the event.
 

Cyprus: Social Welfare Services in the Role of Suppressor.

MIGRANT SUPPORT group KISA yesterday lashed out at Social Welfare Services’ staff over their alleged role in the arrest of people who approach them for help.

In one instance, a case worker is using a woman’s newborn baby to blackmail her into leaving the country, KISA said, adding that the woman has been prevented from accessing the child unless she agrees to leave.
