Central Asia's Migrant Headache

Russia, one of the world’s main recipients of migrant labor, is a major destination country for migrant workers from Central Asia. Remittances from Russia are especially critical to the economies of Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan,1accounting in Tajikistan’s case for nearly half of the country’s GDP. But as the 2008 financial crisis revealed, labor migration has become an unreliable political and economic crutch for these states.

CMW adopts Concluding Observations and Recommendations on Reports of Paraguay and Tajikistan

The Committee on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families today concluded its sixteenth session after adopting its concluding observations and recommendations on the initial reports of Paraguay and Tajikistan. 

The concluding observations and recommendations on the reports of Paraguay and Tajikistan will be available on the Committee’swebpage next week.

Russia: Reported Roundup of Tajik Migrants

The Russian government should refrain from singling out any ethnic population for expulsion and ensure that any detentions and expulsions of foreigners have a legal basis, Human Rights Watch said today. According to media reports, Russia’s Federal Migration Service has said that it has detained several hundred migrant workers from Tajikistan since late last week and plans to expel many of them.
