A fence, but not a solution on the Israel-Egypt border

The flood of media reports on the release of kidnapped Israel Defense Forces soldier Gilad Shalit neglected one detail: The day before the prisoner exchange went through, scores of African labor migrants that had been detained in the Saharonim prison in the Negev appeared on the streets of South Tel Aviv. In order to make room at Saharonim for Hamas prisoners awaiting release in exchange for Shalit, the security establishment had freed the migrants, who scattered around Israel.

Is Any Country in The Middle East Safe for Migrant Workers?

This week, the Philippine government determined that out of all the countries in the Middle East, only two - Oman and Israel – qualify as “safe” for its migrants. This decision becomes all the more shocking considering the low standards set by the Philippine government in order for countries to qualify as “safe”.

Israel’s Cornered ‘Slaves’ Speak Out

Israel: High Court forbids deportation of migrant workers who gave birth

In a landmark ruling, the Israeli High Court of Justice declared last week that the Israeli government’s “pregnant worker regulation” is “unconstitutional”, “disproportional and therefore unreasonable” and “must be abolished”. There’s a lot of talk in Israel about the difference between refugees and migrants. Some apologists for the government’s revolting treatment of refugees and foreign workers claim that most African nationals who come to Israel and claim to be refugees are actually migrant workers and so must be deported. As a migrant myself I wholeheartedly support people’s struggle for a better life through immigration.

African migrant workers in Israel: Two sides of the same border

1,200 African migrants have been estimated to cross the border between Israel and Egypt monthly. This statistic raises many critical questions, but all I wish is to tell the story of this miserable border through the eyes of a random IDF reserves regiment in which I happen to serve.

An Israeli and a Palestinian meet at the separation fence - on the U.S.-Mexico border

Two Indians, a Palestinian and an Israeli meet in San Diego. Where else should they go, if not to the separation fence marking the U.S. border with Mexico? This is not one fence, but three (the third is a wall ), which run along 700 miles of the 2,000-mile border between the two countries.
