Dignity and rights of irregular migrants

African Migration, Global Inequalities, and Human Rights: Connecting the Dots

Migration from and within Africa, just like migration elsewhere in the world, often generates anti-immigrant sentiment and ignites heated public debate about the migration policies of the destination countries. These countries include South Africa as well as others outside the continent. The countries of origin are also keen to minimize losses through “brain drain” and to capture resources such as remittances. Increasingly, international organizations and human rights advocates have stressed the need to protect the interests of migrants themselves.

Sending money home to Africa

In this new IFAD report "Sending money home to Africa: Remittance markets, enabling environment and prospects," the authors cover three aspects: market competition, regulatory environment and financial access. The study covers regulatory issues and the competitive environment in 50 African countries representing 90 per cent of remittance flows to the region. Additionally, the report highlights the results of a survey of people within the geographical reach of microfinance institutions in 19 countries.

EGYPT-ISRAEL: How many migrants are dying at the border?

Amnesty International has called on the Egyptian authorities to "urgently rein in their border security forces" after seven African asylum-seekers were killed in September trying to cross into Israel on foot, but some Israeli NGOs and soldiers say the death toll at the border is far higher.
