Handing over the petition in Budapest

Today at 15.00 a small delegation of Menedék - the Hungarian Association for Migrants, a Hungarian civil society responsible for the Hungarian campaign, delivered 6000 signatures and an Open Letter to the office of the Hungarian Ministry of Interior Affairs. The delegation, consisting of Dr Nagy Boldizsár, Associate Professor of Public International Law at Central European  and at Eötvös Lóránd University and Melegh Attila, Senior Research Fellow.at the Demographic Research Institute and Assistant Professor at Corvinus University had a valuable discussion with Simonné Dr.

Results from petition campaign delivered to Prime Minister's Office

This morning, a small delegation of international, European and Belgian civil society organizations delivered 6000 signatures and an Open Letter to the office of the Belgian Prime Minister. A similar handover will happen in Budapest this afternoon, because Hungary will take over the EU Presidency next month.

Taking the call for ratification to the European Parliament

One week before the results from the petition campaign will be handed over to the Belgian EU presidency, MEPs and UN agencies urged EU Member States to finally ratify the Convention. At an event - jointly organized by the OHCHR Regional Office for Europe, ILO, IOM and December 18 - to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Migrant Workers Convention MEPs Hélène Flaûtre (Greens), Alejandro Cercas (S&D), Rui Tavares (GUE/NGL) and Nadja Hirsch (ALDE) welcomed the petition campaign and expressed their support for promoting respect for migrants rights.

Major European civil society organizations and networks support the call for ratification.

In addition to the support from such international NGOs as Amnesty International (AI), International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), Human Rights Watch (HRW) and Social Watch as well as major trade unions, the following European networks signed on to the call for ratification of the Migrant Workers Convention in the European Union:

Comité Permanent des Médecins Européens (CPME)

Unions support the call for ratification!

Leaders and members of trade unions at the international, European and national level joined the thousands of people who demand that the member states of the European Union finally ratify the Convention. Over 70 MEPs support our petition campaign!

71 MEPs from 25 EU Member States and six different political groups signed the petition calling for the ratification of the Migrant Workers Convention.

December 18 at the World Social Forum on Migrations in Quito

Last week, our colleague Marika Sidoti spoke at the World Social Forum on Migrations in Quito (Ecuador) urging the audience to join the call for the EU member states to finally ratify the Migrant Workers Convention.

December 18 is an NGO in Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.
