Radio1812: Celebrating International Migrants Day Worldwide!
Once again, radio stations from around the world produced and shared programmes on migration, bringing the stories and experiences of migrants and their families. At least 200 stations from 51 countries participated in the fourth edition of the Radio 1812 event, organised by December 18, the Brussels-based international resource centre on the human rights of migrants.
The radio marathon takes place on the occasion of International Migrants Day and aims to raise awareness about migration worldwide and to show that we cannot view migrants as second-class human beings and treat them as commodities.
According to René Plaetevoet, director of December 18, “migration should happen in a proper framework based on internationally accepted human rights principles. Next year’s edition of the Radio 1812 event therefore will be a special edition because it will also be the 20th anniversary of the UN Migrant Workers Convention.”
All kinds of radio stations participated, from community stations to commercial radios, from national and international broadcasters to online radios. It could be a single station or a national or regional network of stations, with each member broadcasting the special programme. A detailed list of participants can be found on the map on the front page of our site www.radio1812.net. You can click through to the websites of the participating stations or listen to a selection of their programs on the Radio1812 site.
