Latino Remitters Muster Economic Power for Change
TIGRA & Nexxo Sign Historic Accord
"Today we have entered into a ground-breaking partnership between Latino immigrant communities and Nexxo Financial Corporation, a money remittance company. Their participation in the Remit4Change (R4C) program marks a milestone in corporate social responsibility and community development." said Francis Calpotura, Director of Remit4Change a Program of
"Nexxo is proud to be part of this effort. Nexxo will donate one dollar for every money transfer transacted by our customers that sign up under the Remit4Change (R4C) program." stated Dave Alvarez, Chief Executive Officer and founder of Nexxo Financial Corporation. "We strongly believe that we should invest in the future development of the communities we serve."
Alvarez said, "This innovative program provides a potent way for remitters to exercise their economic power by spurring corporate social responsibility towards development projects in communities selected by remitters themselves."
"With companies like Nexxo, we are going to build a movement of social responsibility where immigrants use their economic power to promote development in the world," asserted Francis Calpotura.
"Our customers can join the Remit4Change program when they register or at anytime that they come to one of our Nexxo Cajeros (ATM-like machines) by simply picking up the red phone attached to each Cajero and asking our customer care representatives to sign them up for Remit4Change". Said Dave Alvarez, "Nexxo's self-serve remittance to Mexico, Central and South America, operates more than 200 proprietary Nexxo Cajeros in California, New York, Illinois, and Texas. Our customers can transfer money, pay their bills and purchase international long-distance phone minutes at the Cajeros. In partnership with a network of privately operated bill payment processors, Nexxo offers its remittance service in more than 1,000 convenience store locations: throughout California at all ampm branches;, Circle K's in Nevada, Tennessee, Arizona and Texas; and ExxonMobils in Tennessee and Texas. Nexxo Financial has an increasing network of more than 23,000 bank branches and pick-up centers in Mexico, Central and South America."
"Remit4Change , operated by TIGRA, was founded in Mexico City in 2008 with the input of hundreds of immigrant organizations from all across the world." stated Francis Calpotura, "Remit 4Changes goal is to harness the economic power of immigrants, who are remitters and of socially responsible companies that serve this community, in order to grow a development fund for projects aimed to improve the lives of migrants and their families."
"In order for companies to participate in the program, they enter into an accreditation agreement with TIGRA, adhering to standards of social responsibility, business transparency, andfair pricing." said Francis Calpotura.
"This is a historical agreement with Nexxo, as it allows the Latino community to use its power as consumers. Today for the first time, we can now decide what we buy and from whom. We can channel our purchasing power to convince more companies to make social reinvestment commitments to our communities." said David Silva , Director, Comité De Defensa de Potterville, California.
"Nexxo's partnership with our communities makes sending money an act of change and progress. Each of us becomes agents of progress for our communities just by using socially-responsible companies thru Remit4change." Marco Castillo, Director of El Instituto de Investigación y Práctica Social y Cultural (IIPSOCULTA) A.C/ New Haven CT.
"Remit4Change's economic potential is compelling," said Gloria Saucedo, Director of Hermandad Mexicana of San Fernando Valley. It is estimated that over six million immigrants that reside in the United States sent about $58.8 billion to their home countries in Latin America and the Caribbean in 2009. And despite the recession, the number of remittances grew. If existing and future Nexxo customers sign-up for Remit4Change, this money could be used to build water pumps in rural areas of Mexico, El Salvador, Ecuador, or the Dominican Republic, which then helps grow food crops and sustain a local economy."
This is a social movement that is directed to impact and change the conduct of remittance businesses in order to convert them into socially-responsible companies. With the participation of Nexxo, this movement is going forward." said Cesar Rios, director of ASEFIN in San Salvador, El Salvador. "This program creates universal citizenship, by empowering the average women and men to not only help their families but transform the economic realities of the communities they love."
